Introducing Luna 8: Our Fastest HSM Ever, Built for the Post-Quantum Era

Quantum-Safe Root of Trust Delivering Scalable, Multi-Tenant, High-Performance Security and Reliability

Thales is excited to announce Luna 8, its next-generation hardware security module (HSM), designed to protect critical applications, identities, and transactions while helping organizations confidently transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC). Built to address today’s security challenges and evolving regulatory requirements, Luna 8 delivers industry-leading security, performance, scalability, and crypto agility.

Powered by a custom-designed Thales cryptographic processor, Luna 8 provides strong security isolation, exceptional throughput, and low latency to support true multi-tenancy. It securely generates, protects, and manages cryptographic keys for enterprise, cloud, and AI-driven environments, providing a resilient, quantum-safe root of trust for today’s security needs and tomorrow’s compliance requirements.

Performance built for the PQC era:

Luna 8 delivers exceptional performance for both classical and post-quantum cryptography, enabling organizations to adopt PQC while preserving existing cryptographic infrastructure. Its high-throughput, crypto-agile architecture allows organizations to modernize without compromising performance, security, or operational efficiency.

With orders of magnitude faster cryptographic operations, Luna 8 delivers the performance needed for the most demanding applications (up to 10x faster for traditional algorithms and 100x faster for PQC algorithms).

Why choose Luna 8:

  • Quantum-ready, with support for both classical and post-quantum cryptography
  • Our fastest HSM ever, delivering industry-leading performance for high-volume classical and post-quantum cryptographic workloads
  • Scalable architecture for enterprise and hyperscale deployments
  • Future-ready hardware platform designed to accommodate evolving algorithms, standards, and compliance requirements
  • Seamless migration using existing interfaces, applications, and cryptographic workflows
  • Keys are always protected in tamper-resistant hardware to meet strict compliance and security needs (FIPS 140-3 Level 3 and EU Common Criteria certifications are underway)

Luna 8 is delivered on the newly designed Thales HSM platform providing:

  • A multi-tenant architecture, enabling multiple isolated Luna 8 HSM instances to run on a single appliance with strong security isolation and guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS)
  • Predictable performance at scale, maximizing hardware utilization while maintaining consistent throughput across demanding workloads
  • Dynamic provisioning and operational visibility, with real-time hardware utilization metrics and the ability to create new HSM instances on demand to optimize resource utilization, automate operations, and maximize ROI
  • Simplified administration and automation through Luna 8 APIs, with integration across a broad ecosystem of third-party applications, including hundreds of existing Luna 7 integrations for smooth migration
  • A unified hardware platform that supports multiple security use cases, with Thales payShield 11K HSM support planned for a future release

Deployment flexibility:

The Luna 8 Network HSM will be available in three models based on performance, key capacity, and supported containers:

  • Luna 100 (Standard Performance)
  • Luna 150 (Enterprise Performance)
  • Luna 190 (Maximum Performance)

Each model is tailored to common deployment requirements, making it easy to select the right solution for your environment. Each secure container hosts an isolated Luna 8 HSM instance and supports up to 10 partitions.

Built on the new Thales HSM platform, Luna 8 will initially be available as a network appliance, with PCIe, USB, form factors and Luna Cloud HSM Services planned for future releases.

Secure technologies shaping the future of digital trust:

With standards-based cryptographic APIs and integration across a broad ecosystem of industry-leading partners, Luna 8 supports current and emerging use cases across PKI, digital assets, AI, digital identities, IoT, DevOps, code signing, TLS, mobile networks, and more — providing a trusted cryptographic foundation for today’s deployments and tomorrow’s quantum-safe future.
