The Thales Luna 7 Network Hardware Security Module (HSM) has been approved by the BSI, the German Federal Office for Information Security, for use in public sector environments with heightened security requirements. This approval marks an important milestone for digital sovereignty, enabling customers to use market-leading Thales HSMs to help protect data classified as VS-NfD (“classified information – for official use only”), one of the four levels of secrecy for data in German public authorities, from unauthorized access.
- BSI Listing: Approved IT Security Products
To receive BSI approval, cryptographic devices such as HSMs must meet strict standards that demonstrate their ability to securely store key material, resist tampering, and maintain a trusted operating environment. Only HSMs that meet these requirements are permitted to process information marked as VS-NfD.
While this approval is especially important for the German public sector, its significance extends further. Customers in finance, energy, healthcare, telecommunications, and global cloud environments face increasingly sophisticated threats and a growing dependence on cryptographic integrity.
The Luna HSM portfolio continues to evolve to address emerging threats and changing security requirements. Luna HSMs protect cryptographic keys and perform cryptographic operations within tamper-resistant FIPS 140-3 Level 3 validated and Common Criteria EAL4+ certified hardware. This BSI approval adds to a series of important security milestones for Luna 7, following the achievement of the NATO Secret classification level in November 2025, and reflects ongoing investment in post-quantum cryptography (PQC) readiness and crypto agility.
As security risks evolve and expectations for IT security continue to rise, independent validation from authorities such as the BSI strengthens trust in Luna HSMs as a proven foundation for securing critical cryptographic operations.
